ADMISSIONS - FAQs
How does HLS differ from other private schools?
HLS is the only Latin-centered academic program in Central Maine. Latin is introduced in Kindergarten and taught as a core subject beginning in 2nd grade. The study of Latin teaches students how to retain information and develop mastery of the English language.
Students who learn how to learn and master a subject are able to transfer those skills and abilities to other areas making them exceptionally well-trained students and young adults.
Yes, we are accredited by the Classical Latin School Association and have been a partner member since 2019. The CLSA accreditation provides outside accountability and documentation to our students and families.
Is HLS an accelerated program?
Our program is not an accelerated program, but it is an intentional mastery based program and as students invest more time in our program, their abilities and potential increase exponentially. Students grade K-8 score an average of 3.7 grades above their grade level on the nationally normed ITBS standardized test.
Students who currently perform at grade level are great candidates for our program. The environment and culture of academic excellence and scholarship help increase and develop every student's potential, creating many well-trained above-average students.
What are the age requirements?
Students enrolling in our kindergarten program must be 5 years of age by July 1st of the year in which he or she is enrolling.
